Multilocation trials of potatoes adapted to the lowland tropics

Potato can be cultivated in several thousands of hectares in the warm lowlands of Ilocos Norte and Cagayan Valley [Philippines] during the dry season. Cultivation is however, dependent on the limited amount of quality seed tubers produced in the highlands. Lowland farmers have produced seed which is stored under diffused light at ambient temperature for 8 to 9 months in rustic facilities because of lack of appropriate seed cold storage. Yet, present lowland varieties are poorly suited to diffused light storage. As a part of a strategy to provide alternatives to farmers, new lowland potato cultivars were developed and 30 of these were evaluated in multilocation trials in Ilocos Norte and Cagayan Valley in 1993-1994 and in 1994-1995. Farmers participated in the selection of best cultivars which included 385130.11, 385130.6, 385130.77, APC 116, 385080.9, and 385130.5. The new cultivars have a plant maturity ranging from 75 to 90 days, medium to high tuber yields - consistently outyielding the recommended lowland variety Berolina, good eating quality, some can be processed into fried chips, and tuber seeds can be stored in diffused light for 9 months using rustic storage facilities. It is expected that lowland table and seed potato production will be facilitated and sustained with the introduction of new cultivars.
