Error control in wheat yield trials

Effect of moving mean covariance adjustment (MMCA) on error control was compared with RCBD in 43 wheat yield trials containing 18 to 90 entries. Six configurations of moving means comprising 2,4,6,8,10 and 12 plots were tested. CV reduction viz MMCA was observed in 24 trials. It ranged between 2.56 to 26 percent. Most of these trials contained 21 entries. CV magnitudes in RCBD were 10 percent. Moreover, regression coefficients in 22 out of 24 trials were positive and significant. Neighbourhood sizes giving minimum CV were four and two in 15 and 12 trials, respectively while it varied from 6 to 12 plots in 16 trials.
