Combining ability was studied for eight plant performance traits of upland cotton in a 4x4 diallel cross in all possible combinations including selfs and reciprocals. General combining ability (GCA) was highly significant for all the characters. It indicated an additive type of gene action involved in these characters. A cultivar 272/79 was the best general combiner for seed cotton yield, number of bolls per plant, lint percentage and plant height. Two cross combinations of M909 with LRA5166 and LRA5166 with 272/79 are recommended for further breeding programmes on the basis of their mean performance and specific combining ability (SCA). Reciprocal effects were significant in a cross between M909 and LRA5166 in reducing number of bolls per plant.
