A diallel analysis of combining ability involving four selected cotton varieties was undertaken for yield and quality components. The data showed that CIM84 proved better general combiner for seed cotton yield, boll number and lint percentage. Paymaster proved better general combiner for boll weight, seed and lint indices whereas SA100 was superior for staple length only. The combinations of CIM84 x Paymaster, 1309/68 x SA100 and SA100 x Paymaster exhibited high specific combining ability (SCA) for seed cotton yield, staple length and boll weight, respectively. The cross 1309/68 x CIM84 showed higher SCA for number of bolls per plant and lint percentage. High SCA effects were found in 1309/68 x Paymaster for seed and lint indices. Higher reciprocal effects for lint percentage and staple length were scored in Paymaster x CIM84, whereas these were high for both weight and lint index in Paymaster x 1309/68. Higher reciprocal effects were noted in CIM84 x 1309/68 for yield of seed cotton and boll number per plant and in SA100 x 1309/68 and Paymaster x SA100 for seed index.
