General (GCA) and specific combining ability (SCA) and reciprocal effects for protein content, yield and four yield components were computed from all possible diallel crosses including reciprocals among five widely adapted local wheat varieties viz. Chakwal86, LU26S, Pak81, Punjab85 and Lyallpur73. Mean squares for GCA, SCA and reciprocals were significant for almost all investigated characters except spike length and number of kernels per spike. Here mean squares were non-significant for SCA and reciprocals. Additive effects were more important for yield per plant, spike length and number of kernels per spike. However, gene action was non-additive for protein content, number of spikes per plant and 1000-kernel weight. Reciprocal effects were significant for few parameters. But for most of the attributes these were negligible. Variety Chakwal86 was found to be the best general combiner for yield and yield components except for 1000-kernel weight. For protein content GCA effects were maximum in Lyallpur73. Two crosses Pak81 x Chakwal86 and LU26S x Lyallpur73 may produce high yielding segregants in later generations.
