Application of known conservation tillage practices in "Developing Country" semi-arid environments
1991
Ofori, C.S. (FAO, Rome (Italy))
While conventional tillage has been the main mechanized agricultural system practiced to date, recent developments of soil conservation tillage practices have been successfully applied in many farm enterprises developed countries, in particular in the United States of America and Australia. However, there are constraints to the transfer of conservation tillage packages to semi-arid zones of many developing countries where livestock is an important part of the farming system. Crop residue, an essential component of conservation tillage, has many economic uses other than for soil and moisture conservation in these countries. Provision of other sources of feed for livestock has to be given more attention if crop residues are to be made available for soil and moisture conservation. Research results obtained from some semi-arid regions indicate the need for conventional tillage on certain soils, especially sandy ones. Training of farmers and technicians in conservation tillage and crop residue management is considered a prerequisite for prevention of further soil degradation and increasing crop yields
