The Soil Moisture and Temperature map of Iran was used as the basis for differentiating agroclimatological regions suitable for dryland farming. The potential of these areas for wheat production has been evaluated according to the severity and length of cold and drought periods. Conventional tillage practices and new trends are also explained and the dominant soil types in different areas are described. Results of an experiment conducted in the four main dryland farming areas of Iran on the effects of different tillage practices of soil moisture conservation for early germination are presented. WUE of different common rotations is calculated and the potential of areas with cool winters for wheat and barley production as well as possible ways for increasing WUE in such environment are discussed. The potential of annual rainfall for crop production in the Dry Oak Forest region is evaluated
