The effect of red light on gibberellins activity in maize seedlings during the de-etiolation
1994
Salamatova, T.S.
The effect of red light (RL) on the growth and activity of gibberellins (GA) in organs of 3-day old etiolated maize seedlings has been studied. The GA activity was determined with high sensitive bioassay (the growth of the maize primary leaves base). The growth of primary leaves and coleoptile of the intact seedling is increased (by 52 and 18 percent) and the growth of mesocotyle and root is decreased by 95 and 52 percent respectively after 6 h RL (640-690 nm, 34 J/m2) exposure. RL did not suppress the maize mesocotyle growth directly for 3 h. The mesocotyle growth inhibition of RL is apparently due to the organs relationship in the whole seedling. The levels of endogenous GA activity in leaf and mesocotyle are positively correlated with its growth. The reverse relations are observed for coleoptile and root
