The biological soil activity fixed by C02 production as basal and potential respiration can be an important criterion in evaluating productivity and environmental quality. The basal aeration (no substrate added) demonstrated by low C sub(ox) content in the examined eutric fluvisol. The application of 140 kg of nitrogen per hectare per year did not increase basal respiration. The potential respiration was increased significantly by the addition of glucose. The low humus content was the limiting factor of the soil biological activity in our experimental conditions.
