In 1986-1989 in the large-scale conditions of the Nitra agroclimatical area, Slovakia, energy efficiency of the ensilage maize cultivation system was observed. Values of different partial energy inputs were calculated. The average energy inputs for ensilage maize cultivation were 31.48 GJ.ha** (-1). The highest proportion of energy inputs is taken up by fertilizers, from 43.65 % to 57.36 %. The energy content in the dry matter yield of above-ground biomass was 133.55 GJ.ha ** (-1) and pure energy output was 102.11 GJ.ha** (-1). The energy efficiency ratio of output and input of the supplemental energy varied from 3.52 to 5.01. Ensilage maize canopies used on average 1.16 % of photosynthetically active radiation for yielding above-ground biomass.
