Crossbred American Brahman fattening by smallholders
1991
Chonlasti Chetanasean
Cost of fattening steers with light and heavy initial liveweights was 8,802.69 and 9,845.67 Baht/head respectively. Seventy to eighty percentage of the cost was the cost of the animals plus concentrate feed. The net cash income was 4,062.32 and 4,307.20 Baht/head and the total net incomes were 2,150.04 and 2,858.76 Baht/head for the light and heavy initial liveweight groups respectively. A number of problems were observed with the smallholders who need to earn extra money by fattening steers. The most important one was the lack of capital input. Secondly, owing to insufficient steers supply, the initial cost of the animals to be purchased was found to be too expensive. Therefore, the success in fattening steers as a secondary occupation for smallholders depended very much on the support in terms of finance, know how and marketing of the responsible governmental institutes.
