Effect of hand pollination on fruit set and fruit characteristics of four pummelo (Citrus maxima (J. Burman) Merrill) cultivars
1991
Suwannapong Thongplew
Cross pollination by hand gave the highest percentage, 9-24 %, of fruit setting. The best fruit set was obtained from crossing Thong Dee x Kao Puang and Koa Pan x Koa Puang was the worst. Self pollination by hand gave the lowest fruit setting, 0-2.8 % in all cultivars except 14 % in Koa Pan. However open pollination of fruit set showed 15-20 %. Growth and development of fruits from all crosses were found as simple sigmoid curve. Shape of fruits of cross, opened and self pollination looked similar. Size and fruit weight were not significantly different when using Koa Pan or Koa Hom as seed parent plant. However, when using Thong Dee as seed parent plant, flesh weight, segment number, normal seed number and total soluble solids were significantly different. When ever Koa Puang was seed parent plant, only flesh weight and normal seed number were different. Pollen viability of 4 cultivars, when testing by acetocarmine 1 %, was 84-99.4 %. But pollen germination in Brewbaker's solution, adding agar 2 % and optimum sucrose levels about 15-20 % was 11.5-80.3 %. Shape of pollens was spherical about 23.9-25.1 % micrometer in equatorial axis and 23.9-25.2 micrometer in polar axis
