Attempts have been made to induce shoot bud formation from cultures of cowpea (Vigna unguiculata cv. IT82E-889) immature embryos. The immature embryos were cultured on modified Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium which consisted of MS inorganic salts and B5 vitamins. The medium was supplemented with various combinations of benzyladenine (BA) and napthaleneacetic acid (NAA) concentrations plus various proline concentrations. Only the concentration of AB in the medium had a pronounced effect on shoot bud formation. The optimum concentration of BA appeared to be at (10 micro M)
