Effects of environmental factors on growth and development of five soybean lines grown at two locations

Five soybean lines, viz. SJ 4, SJ 5, Nakhon Sawan 1, KUSL 20017 and KUSL 20056 were planted in the rainy season of 1986 and dry season of 1987 at Kasetsart University Kamphang Saen Campus, Nakhon Pathom Province and the National Corn and Sorghum Research Center (Farm Suwan), Pak Chang District, Nakhon Ratchasima Province. Since the locations in this study represented the potential growing areas of the central plain, therefore it is anticipated that the information obtained would be useful for soybean promotion in these growing areas. The 5 soybean lines varied in growth response to these environments. Although locations exerted quite a strong effect on growth characteristics, however, the growth response due to seasons was even more prominent. In general, soybeans grown at Farm Suwan exhibited growth and produced higher yield than those planted at Kamphaeng Saen. Within the same planting area, soybeans planted in the rainy season gave better yield than those planted in the dry season. Among soybean cultivars used soybean line KUSL 20056 gave better yield than other lines when planted at both locations.
