Effects of compound fertilizer and nitrogen topdressing on growth, seed yield and seed quality of sunflower

Both compound and urea fertilizers caused S 101 to have longer leaf age than Hysun 33, higher leaf area index (LAI), total dry matter and seed yield in S 101 as compared to Hysun 33. Both fertilizers, Hysun 33 to have higher protein content in seeds than that in S 101 even if the oil content in seeds from the former was lower than from the latter. Application of compound fertilizer and topdressing of urea at floral initiation gave no difference in plant height, total dry matter and N content as compared to those applied at anthesis. Fertilizer application at floral initiation or at anthesis did not cause any difference on seed yield, protein and oil contents. Applications of compound fertilizer at 30 kg/rai including urea at 11.95 kg/rai caused great increment of seed yield, number of seed per head, protein content LAI and total dry matter, as compared to non-fertilizer application. Increasing rate of urea 11.95 kg/rai in addition to 30 kg/rai of compound fertilizer was not significant in raising levels of all mentioned character, 30 kg/rai of compound fertilizer or 11.95 kg/rai of urea tended to increase all the characters above. When only one of the two fertilizers was applied, the degree of increasing of the mentioned characters seemed to be lower than when 30 kg/rai of compound fertilizer plus 11.95 kg/rai of urea was applied. Application of compound fertilizer (15-15-15) at 30 kg/rai in addition to topdressing of urea at 11.95 kg/rai at floral initiation stage might be worth and sufficient for high seed yield production.
