Total root length, thick root number, root length density, maximum of thick root length, root dry weight, plant height and leaf area were significantly different among varieties and positively correlated with dry weight of shoot when PEG 6000 was used. Leaf rolling, drought and recovery scores were negatively and significantly correlated between field experiment and PEG 6000 method. Total root length, thick root number, root length density, maximum of thick root length, root dry weight, increase of plant height, leaf area and shoot dry weight can be selected efficiently on individual plant for drought resistance characteristics. Selection of line or variety could be on means of total root length, root length density, thick root number. Varieties having deep, thick and dense root and high root dry weight tend to be resistant to drought. The increase of plant height, leaf area and shoot dry weight appeared to be good indicator for the development of the root system.
