Contribution of associated legumes to corn in an intercropping system

Evidence suggests that associated legumes improved corn yield in intercropping systems. The experiments were to investigate if legumes in corn-legume intercropping without fertilizer can boost yield of corn comparable to that obtained from monocropped corn with fertilizer. There were 2 sets of experiment, 1 (Chainat series) and 2 (Kumpangsan series) with identical treatments in the rainy season. This was done to evaluate, in the dry season, the residual effect associated legumes on corn yield, in experiment 1 and to evaluate the effect of repeated cropping system in experiment 2. In the rainy season, although the results were not statistically significant in both experiment 1 and 2, the tendency was that greater than corn grain yields were obtained, in experiment 1, from CRBgm, CLLgm and CBBgm without fertilizer application (970.7, 938.7 and 921.7 kg/rai, respectively) as compared to C with fertilization (839.1 kg/rai). In experiment 2, CLLgm and CRBgm without fertilization outyielded (723.5 and 702.3 kg/rai, respectively) C with fertilization (653.7 kg/rai). For the dry season, though the results were not significant, residual effects of the previous cropping system were observed in experiment 1 as corn planted after CBB and CLM without fertilizer yielded (805.5 and 704.3 kg/rai, respectively) greater than C with fertilization (688.3 kg/rai). In experiment 2, only CRBgm and CLLgm without fertilization showed consistent and statistically greater grain yields (774.2 and 721.1 kg/rai, respectively) than C with fertilization (688.4 kg/rai). The merit of legumes in the current season to associated corn and the residual effects of some intercropping system involving legumes to the following corn crop. Recommendation is that Lablab bean and rice bean can potentially be intrarow-intercropped with corn and used as green manure.
