Soil and nitrogen losses from a flatland soil

The use of ridges for crop cultivation in low-lying areas increases interrill erosion and can lead to heavy soil and nutrient losses. A study was conducted on an ultisol to investigate the extent of soil loss and overland movement of N as influenced by fertilizer practices observed in some farming districts in Trinidad. Soil loss ranged from 1.0 to 7.2 t/ha. for individual runoff events. Total N concentration in the eroded sediments varied between 1.10 to 3.94 g/kg and was significantly affected by vegetative cover, N fertilizer formulation and application methods. The highest N concentrations in the sediments were observed at the first runoff event after fertilizer application. Total N losses with the sediments were significantly influenced by cropping and N fertilizer formulation and varied between 1.10 to 22.05 kg/ha. Recommendations are given to reduce soil and nitrogen loss from ridged rows.
