Plant disease diagnosis in Trinidad and Tobago: Role, scope and function in sustainable agriculture

Phytopathological activities conducted by agricultural institutions in Trinidad and Tobago from the early 20th century to the present time, with emphasis on disease diagnosis and identification of causal agents, are briefly summarized. Data acquired from the operation of the plant disease diagnostic service in the Ministry of Agriculture, Trinidad and Tobago, are presented. An average per year of 238 applications from farmers and 96 consignments from plant quarantine were handled during 1984-1991. The majority of diagnoses done for farmers involved diseases due to fungi and bacteria. New diseases in Trinidad and Tobago identified from the service offered to farmers and important pathogens intercepted in plant quarantine consignments, are presented. The current status of the plant disease diagnostic service is described and its support role in research, extension, training and other service activities, is discussed. Prospects for improvement of the service and strengthening linkages between the service and national and international institutions are discussed in the context of sustainable agricultural development.
