An approach to increased sustainability in yam production in Jamaica

The agricultural production process is complex and continually changing as new technologies appear. With the onset of the Minisett Technology of yam production in Jamaica, it is anticipated that the adoption of this technique over the traditional method of yam production will result in an increase in the productivity of yams. Yam is of great value to the Jamaican economy, being the fourth most important export crop. The area under yam production has almost doubled from over 7,000 hectares to almost 14,000 hectares over the period 1981 to 1991. This has resulted in an increase in production from 135,182 tonnes to 186,104 tonnes. The traditional method is said to be the major constraint to increased production because it encourages soil erosion, is labour intensive and prevents mechanized land preparation. The Minisett technique is said to reduce soil erosion and environmental damage caused by the cutting of stakes. However, the extent of environmental damage from increased yam production has yet to be ascertained if the Minisett technique is adopted by farmers. The sustainability of yam production in Jamaica is dependent on continued government and private sector support, and increased exports for expanded production. There is also a need to further develop cultural practices, and to ensure that increased production has no negative impact on the environment.
