Role of small ruminants in sustainable agriculture

Sustainable agriculture implies production of food and development of related agricultural services in harmony with the natural environment in its broadest sense including air, water, land, plants, animals and humans. It calls for achieving 'optimum growth' while preserving and enhancing the environment at the same time. Any programme concerned with sustainable agriculture should be able to provide leadership, education and technical assistance to the agricultural community seeking ecologically and technically sound methods of producing food and improving farm livelihood. It calls for recognizing the interdependence between biological, social and spiritual factors in promoting 'custodianship' and 'health' of the land and the people which it supports. The growing environmental awareness among urban population will ultimately affect agricultural practices. The agricultural community must acknowledge and respond to these concerns. The sustainable agricultural methods are not yet a well defined set of practices or management techniques, but a range of choices and management options to consider along with the constraints and opportunities farmers face. It is being suggested that successful sustainable agricultural development programmes must be community based, make small farmers the focus of their attention and aim at poverty alleviation, rural development and management, conservation and enhancement of natural resources.
