In five progeny trials with 26 Upper Amazon and 11 Trinitario parents, inheritance of yield was additive. Inter Upper Amazon crosses outyielded a commercially proven Upper Amazon x Trinitario control but no improvement was obtained with Upper Amazon x Trinitario crosses. Yields of 15 clones showed a strong interaction with planting densities of 1096 and 3333 points/ha. Results show that the relationship between the yield of a clone and its GCA for yield is dependent upon the planting density of both clones and progenies. Yield improvement can be obtained by recurrent selection, with alternating cycles of clone and progeny trials, and beginning with a broad genetic base.
