Microbiological decontamination study of medicinal herbs with peracetic acid
1995
Stojadinov, J.
A study was carried out with chamomile flower, peppermint leaves and fennel fruit. It was found that the microbiological decontamination of tested drugs was possible in the atmosphere of finely dispersed 6 peracetic acid of up to mist particle size within 10 min. Under these conditions the essential oil content in the drugs did not practically change, as well as the qualitative and quantitative composition, to the extent that would effect the quality of the respective drug. The effect of various peracetic acid concentrations upon microorganisms within 10, 20 and 30 min. was evaluated. It was found that peracetic acid exhibited different effect in depedence of the morphological properties of the drug. A successful decontamination of herbal drugs can be carried out by diluted peracetic solutions finely dispersed up to mist particle size. Decontamination conditions must be determined for each herbal material individually
