Understanding the complex mechanisms implicated in the control of floral transition a multidisciplinary approach combining the so-called classical morphological and physiological methodologies with the genetic and molecular analyses. However, there is, so far,no one plant model allowing to take advantage of all the potentialities of these technologies. In the present report, I thus pay particular attention to a few selected species, mainly Arabidopsis thaliana, Pisum sativum and Sinapis alba - that each offers, as compared to the other two, advantages for studying flowering and review the present knowledge concerning the role of a limited number of exogenous and endogenous factors, namely daylength, gibberellins, cytokinins and carbohydrates.
