Women and children belong to the population categories that are most affected by the risk of contracting HIV/ AIDS. In this article, we study the economic effects of HIV/ AIDS on women and their families in rural sub-Saharan Africa. It is important to be well-informed about the way families cope with the presence of HIV/AIDS. HIV/AIDS programmes can then better finetune their content to the reality of the family economy. Economic incentives can be established in order to reduce the HIV/ AIDS incidence. The most important incentives we discuss are the improvement of health care for the HIV/AIDS patient via home-based care, the increase of income of women, and the guarantee of education for children in poor HIV/ AIDS-affected families.
