Evidence for variation in pathogenicity in sugar beet amongst BNYVV isolates

Since the existence of different genotypes of BNYVV has been established possible differences in pathogenicity amongst these different types as well as the consequences resulting from these findings are discussed by phytopathologists and breeders. To get more information about this, a pot experiment was performed in which sugar beet varieties different in the degree and the genetic background of resistance were infected with different isolates of BNYVV, type A or type B, respectively. As a result it was found, that the damage caused by rhizomania and as a consequence the priority amongst varieties in respect to yield and quality (root yield, corrected sugar yield) as well as other disease indicating signs (virus content, water use efficiency) differs in relation to isolate, used for infection. Considering the fact that results have been obtained by only a one year's experiment, they indicate strongly, that there are differences in pathogenicity amongst BNYVV isolates which also influence the degree of damage.
