Studies on the influence of Cercospora foliar disease on the alpha-Amino N content of the sugar beet

During 2 years 2 sugar beet fields with different varieties have been artificially inoculated with Cercospora beticola. The varieties differed in disease intensity. An increase of disease intensity of C. beticola was followed by an increase of alpha-Amino-N-content. This tendency was more marked in the susceptible variety than the resistant. The results of a variety trial in 1993 could be reproduced in 1994. For the susceptible variety, an increasing level of disease intensity led to an increasing alpha-Amino-N-content in 1994. The reaction of the resistant variety was less intensive.
