Year (weather conditions), location (soil and topographical characteristics), time of sowing, time of harvest, fertilization, variety, plant population, irrigation, pests and diseases, way of topping and storage conditions are agronomic factors, which influence the parameters generally used to estimate the amount of extractable sugar in sugar beets: root yield and sugar, potassium, sodium and alpha-amino nitrogen content. Although year and location are the most important factors with regard to yield and quality, the farmer may improve the quantity of extractable sugar by choosing suitable varieties, aiming at optimal plant population and fertilization, preventing stress conditions such as drought, controlling pests and diseases, and harvesting and storage under optimal conditions.
