Quality of Swiss maize seed
1997

High yield and excellent quality are crucial in maize seed production. The genetic purity of hybrid seed produced in Switzerland between 1993 and 1995 was tested in traditional cultivation trials and in the laboratory using isoelectric focussing of seed prolamins (zeins). 67 out of 75 tested seed lots showed good to very good genetic purity. Electrophoresis allows for rapid and precise quality assessment of seed lots. Two varieties did not show the required heterogeneity in banding patterns, so electrophoresis of zeins could not be used for differentiation. Quality analyses with electrophoresis is still not part of official seed certification. This method may, however, be used to identify seed lots with insufficient quality after harvest
