42 varieties of cocksfoot (Dactylis glomerata L.) and 28 varieties of tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea Schreb.) were used in a field experiment to test varietal infuence on the content of digestible organic matter of the forage. Tall fescue was more digestible than cocksfoot throughout the growing season. The varieties of both species showed a considerable variation in digestibility. During primary growth this effect was partly due to a different stage of development at the same age of growth. The ranking in digestibility of the varieties was only slightly influenced by location and year
