The objective of this study was to monitor deterioration in Atriplex cordobensis seeds under conditions of natural and accelerated ageing and to analyse some of the biochemical changes produced under these conditions. Results showed that conductivity and malondialdehyde (MDA) assays were only sensitive to accelerated deterioration. In very deteriorated seeds, under both natural and accelerated ageing, the variations in fatty acid composition produced a significant reduction in the unsaturated/saturated ratio and iodine value. These changes, due mainly to the decrease of unsaturated fatty acids content, give evidence of lipid peroxidation. The results presented suggest that in accelerated aged A. cordobensis seeds, lipid peroxidation produces damage in the membranes that could contribute to losses of seed viability, but for naturally aged seed there is not complete evidence of an association between lipid peroxidation and loss of viability
