Bitter pit of apples
1996
Kokkalos, T.I. (Agricultural Res. Inst., Nicosia (Cyprus))
Apples (varieties Lord Lambourne, Starking Delicious, Red Delicious, Emprire, Gala) showed insignificant bitter pit when grown on calcareous soil (40 per cent calcium carbonate) but up to 70 per cent bitter pit when grown on a carbonate-free soil on certain rootstocks. Spray application of calcium chloride or calcium nitrate did not reduce bitter pit but dipping the fruit at harvest in one per cent calcium chloride reduced bitter pit. The leaves and the fruit contained twice as much calcium when the trees were grown on calcareous soil than on the carbonate-free soil
