Hippophae rhamnoides L. in Estonia for fruit growing
1996
Piir, R. (Estonian Agricultural Univ., Tartu (Estonia))
Over 22 years, 33 sea buckthorn cultivars were collected for the Polli Experiment Station, including 16 cultivars from the Siberian Research Institute of Horticulture and 12 cultivars from the Botanic Garden of the Moscow State University, named in honour of M. Lomonossov. Besides these cultivars there was one selection from the Estonian amateur breeder A. Kirk and wild male plants grown in Estonia, these being more winter hardy than male plants from the Siberian Research Institute. Over the 22 years of experiments, it appeared that all the cultivars of Siberian origin are not winter hardy in the Estonia climate with us, alternating thaw and cold periods. The cultivar 'Oranzhevaya' appeared to overwinter better than the others. This cultivar has the highest vitamin C and oil content compared with the other cultivars. The disease, Verticillium dahliae, seriously threatens sea buckthorn growing in Estonia, especially the cultivars of Altai origin
