In the Department of Virology, Institute of Experimental Biology the theoretical and technological basis for production of virus resistant initial material for potato breeding and seed production is investigated. Virus resistance analysis of potato cultivars more cultivated in Estonia and prospective for breeding, their seedlings, meristemic clones and callus somaclones are carried out. The degree of susceptibility/resistance to potato viruses, the symptoms of infection and the intensities of virus biosynthesis in sap inoculated plants and their tuber progeny are determined. As a result of our infection tests by sap inoculation, the virus resistant virus-cultivar combinations have been found. The degree of susceptibility to virus infection and intensity of virus biosynthesis were higher and symptoms more severe in the plants of second generation than in the inoculated plants
