Formation of phytoproductivity of alfalfa-rich grass-sward
1994
Lillak, R. (Estonian Agricultural Univ., Tartu (Estonia). Inst. of Grassland Husbandry and Botany)
This research, conducted in 1985-1989 aimed to clarify the dependence of the development, growth, persistence, phytomass and formation of its components (DM yield, stubble and root weight) of an alfalfa-rich sward on the time of the first and last cuts (harvests were made in May 9 - July 25 and September 20 - October 13, on the number of cuts (2-4 cuts in a vegetation period), and on the soil water regime in slighly acid soil, which is typical of the South-Estonian region. The dynamics of total nitrogen concentration and its accumulation in different parts of the phytomass were examined. Special attention was paid to the biochemical composition of herbage, elimination of major macroelements (P, K, Ca, Mg) from soil to herbage, as well as to the correlation between weather conditions and the quantitative and qualitative factors of the alfalfa sward
