The present paper gives a survey of the high occurrence of metabolic diseases due to structural changes in feed and fodder production on the farm. Metabolic acidosis can be diagnosed by the determination of the acidity of the first colostrum. Colostrum with high and very high acidity must be neutralized before feeding it to calves. In the treatment of acidosis of cattle better results were obtained by the administration of Na2CO3. Acidosis is a cause of lower productivity and of complications in the reproduction of cattle. The best preventive measures against acidosis are high feeding standards and a high degree of skill in the management of the cattle
