Effect of sowing date, weeding frequency and seed rate on yield of faba bean grown on pellic vertisols at Sheno

Faba bean yield is greatly affected by frost and aphids at Sheno. Early sowing exposes faba bean to aphids and late sowing exposes it to frost. Farmers use low seed rates (about 160 to 185 kg/ha) on vertisols of North Shewa. Weeding is not the common practice. Identifying these faba bean production constraints, an on-station experiment was conducted in 1989, 1990 and 1992 to determine the optimum sowing date, weeding frequency and seed rate of faba bean (CS-20DK). Sowing faba bean in the last week of May to the first week of June gave significantly better seed and straw yields. Aphid infestation level was negligible in whole range of sowing dates over the three years. There was several frost damage in 1989 on the pods of late June sown plots. Broadcasting at a rate of 260 to 370 kg/ha (= 52 to 74 plants/sq.m.) gave significantly better seed and straw yields. A seed rate of 260 kg/ha for well prepared seedbeds or 370 kg/ha for rough seedbeds is suggested. These seed rates, however, be verified on farmers' field for recommendation. Weeding once on the fifth week after emergence significantly improved seed and straw yields compared to weedy check. Sowing dates, weeding frequencies and seed rates affected also faba bean yield components.
