The effect of plant species, nitrogen fertilization and growing stadium on the elemental composition of sward

12 sward species, grown under two levels of nitrogen fertilization, were sampled 6-7 times during the months of May and June. The analysis of the concentrations of 14 elements revealed significant differences between most of the species. Out of the possible total 66 combinations of species, 19-33 significant differences were shown between the pairs for each of the elements. The comparison of concentrations of specific elements between these feed crops shows similar tendencies to those indicated by other studies that examined these plants growing near each other at other times and on other types of soils. This suggests the relative stability of ionic uptake for these species. The species-specific water requirement figure (W-value) was positively correlated with the concentrations of magnesium. The supplemental 200 kg/ha nitrogen fertilizer increased the concentrations of aluminium by over 20 percent, and decreased those of P, Cu, Mg, Co, Zn, and Na by over 20 percent in all species. The plants showed 20-76 percent higher Cd, Pb, P, Zn, and Cu average uptake during the first three weeks of sampling compared to uptake during weeks 4, 5, and 6. However, the concentrations of sodium were, on average, over twice as high during the later sampling periods
