The effect of genotype on the liver weight in geese

An experiment was carried out at the Goose Breeding Research Station of the Godollo University of Agricultural Science, Babat, with 6 groups of 50 geese. The groups differed in the genotypes of the geese. The six genotypes were: Landes from Bulgaria, Benkovska White, their crossbred: Bella-1 hybrid, Landes from Babat, Hungarian White and their crossbreed: hybrid called Babat. The data of individual body weight, feed consumption per group, body weight after force-feeding, liver weight and quality were collected. The connection between fattened body weight and liver weight was determined by correlation and regression analyses. The body weight of the Bella-1 hybrid was significantly higher than the average body weight of its parental breeds, while the body weight of the Babat hybrid was significantly higher than that of the Landes (mother breed). The feed consumption for 1 kg body weight gain was significantly lower in the Bella-1 hybrid than in its parental breeds, and significantly lower in the Babat hybrid, than in the Landes. The heaviest livers were produced by the Bulgarian Landes (827.1 g) and the Landes from Babat (781.7 g) genotypes. The correlation between live weight after force-feeding and liver weight seemed to be significant in all genotypes, except the Hungarian breed. The best quality liver was produced by the Landes breed, independent of its place of origin. The hybrids produced livers of intermediate quality
