Phenotypic correlations between somatic cell count and milk components

There were two experiments carried out to study the SCC in the milk of different sheep breeds. In the first trial Lacaune (L), East Friesian (EF) and (LxEF)F1 ewes were milked, while in the second British Milksheep purebred and crossbred ewes were studied in a long term experiment between 1992-1994. Phenotypic correlations were calculated among the SCC and the milk production traits. The values of somatic cells counts were, in general, much higher in the afternoon than in the morning. These values were fluctuating during the lactation, howewer, increasing trends were shown from the beginning and up to the end of lactation. Breed/genotype differences were also found. The somatic cells counts increased with the age, year and the number of lactations. Significant breed effects were observed within the values of correlation coefficients between the SCC and the production traits. The correlations were negative between the somatic cells counts as well as daily milk yield and the lactose content of the milk. The 'r' values were positive in the case of fat- and protein and with the pH readings. The values and the mark of the correlation coefficients were changing during the lactations and the year also had an effect on this data
