Four rice varieties consisting of two locals Pulureni and Padimuta and two improved varieties IR42 and Semeru were used for this study. The local varieties served as the female parents and each was crossed with improved varieties. The parents, F1 and F2 populations, were planted together in Muara sub station of BORIF. A five-row plot was applied to the parents, a two row plot to the F1 and a sixteen-row plot to the F2. Each row consisted of 20 plants in which one seedling per hill was planted with 25 cm spacing. The results of the analysis indicated that the high panicle number was partial dominance, and complete dominance for low panicle number. Interpreting the frequency distribution of the F2 population which is normal and continuous distribution, it can be concluded that panicle number character was polygenic controlled. In broad sense, heritability value in the panicle number was high, suggesting that the panicle number was considerably determined by the genetic factor
