Household consumer preferences on hot pepper quality

The objectives of this study were to identify household consumer preference for hot pepper and to determine factors affecting hot pepper purchase. Survey was conducted from September to October 1992 in Bandung. Primary data were collected from 45 respondents, 15 from high income household level, 15 from medium income household level and 15 from low income household level. Respondents from each level were chosen by randomized sampling. Consumer preferences of hot pepper quality was analysed by ranking technique and tested by chisquare analysis P= 0.01. The result of this research showed that : the main factors of hot pepper quality that affected the three income household levels' consideration in purchasing hot pepper were dark red skin colour, long fruit shape (approx. 10 cm), smooth and shiny fruit shape, medium fruit diameter. Medium fruit hardness was prefered by medium and lower income household levels, whereas high income household level prefered fruit hardness (medium hard). The other factors which were less considered by the three income household levels were fruit shape at blossom end, seed number, flesh colour, flesh thickness, pungency, placenta and flavour
