Methods of sustainable production of a high quality rice based on the combination method of fertilizer application: Estimations of standard value for the diagnosis of growth and nutrition status

Studies were carried to develop a method of sustainable production of a high quality rice based on the combination method of fertilizer application in Koshihikari. 1) The palatability was controlled by the nitrogen content in brown rice and it was low when the nitrogen content in brown rice exceeded 14g kg(-1). 2) the nitrogen content in brown rice was controlled by the amount of nitrogen in the plants and the number of grains per square meter. There was a close correlation between the palatability and the amylographic characteristics of milled rice besides the nitrogen content in brown rice. 3) The nitrogen content in brown rice was affected by the amount of carbohydrate in the plants until the heading stage, and the relationship between the increase in grain weight per grain and the amount of nitrogen accumulated in grain per grain during the ripening period. 4) Control of the amount of nitrogen at the respective growth stage to sustainable production of a high quality rice was determined depending on the soil groups and the number of grains per square meter. On the unfavorable weather condition, it is important to control the number of grains in addition to the amount of nitrogen at the respective growth stage. The number of grains per square meter was estimated from measurement of leaf color and the number of tillers. Based on the results, it is considered that if meteorological variation is forcasted at the respective growth stage and the appropriate pattern of nitrogen absorption based on the diagnosis of growth and nutrition straws is controlled, it may became possible to achieve sustainable production of the high quality rice based on the combination method of fertilizer application
