Leaf mold production and forest management through the gathering of fallen leaves: A case study in Tochigi prefecture [Japan]

To produce leaf mold, forests around rural settlements, which consist mainly of deciduous broadleaved trees, are used and are well-managed and guarded from forest devastation. This report is to clarify leaf mold production, mainly for gardening, and its marketing system and how to manage forests through gathering the fallen leaves in Tochigi prefecture. Most of the people who gather fallen leaves for leaf mold are aged farmers and workers of leisure establishments, for example, golf links. It is important to understand that leaf mold production for gardening and agriculture can be a good incentive to manage forests. However there are serious problems: namely, that forests that are suitable for this use are limited, as are people who are willing to join in the gathering of fallen leaves. Some immediate administrative measures giving incentive to local residents to continue gathering fallen leaves are needed to conserve forests around settlements
