The new barley cultivar Suzukaze (Hordeum vulgare L.) was registered as Barley Norin 33 in 1993. Suzukaze was selected at the National Agriculture Research Center (NARC, MAFF) from the cross, Kokei RB3017-5/Kankei b316, obtained at the Central Agricultural Experiment station in 1978. Kokei RB3017-5 was selected from the cross, Kokei B4205/Kankei b252 (later registered as Natoriomugi). Kokei B4205 was also selected from the cross, Kantokawa 27 (latter registered as Dorirumugi)/Haganemugi. Selection for high yield, good plant type and resistance to barley yellow mosaic virus was carried out at NARC in 1979-1985 and one promising line was selected and named Kantokawa 68. From 1986, regional adaptability trials were performed at nine Prefectural Experiment Station and the practical performance trials were also performed in a designated area of Saitama prefecture. Main characteristics of Suzukaze are as follows: 1) Resistant to barley yellow mosaic virus, slightly susceptible to powdery mildew and susceptibile to scab. 2) Middle sized culm, slightly long spike and lodging resistance. 3) Six-rowed bulled barley, uzu-type, spring habit, showing the same intermediate heading and maturation characteristics as the cultivar Sekitorisai 1. 4) Superior quality of roasted barley for tea flavor compared with the standard cultivar Kashimamugi. Suzukaze is well adapted to the flat area of the Kanto district. This cultivar has been registered as recommended cultivar in Saitama prefecture since 1994
