In order to define the relationship between the content of gibberellin and the growth at the tillering stage, rice plants were treated with applications of gibberellin (+GA) and pacrobutrazol (an inhibitor of gibberellin, -GA) between 1991-1992. The results obtained were summarized as follows: 1) The plants treated with +GA were characterized by tall plant height and a small number of tillers. The plants treated with -GA, however, showed the opposite characteristics. 2) A high correlation was recognized between the content of gibberellin in the shoot and the leaf area per stem. 3) Based upon thee facts, it could be concluded regarding the role of gibberellin on the growth type that gibberellin, as its primary effect on growth type, changes the distribution ratio of photosynthetic products to the elongation of plant height. Also, by affecting the occurrence of tillers gibberellin changes the leaf area per stem, which is the sink capacity per stem for photosynthetic products. As for its secondary effect, gibberellin influences the content of other hormones controlling the apical dominance of plants, resulting in the change of growth type. 4) The changes in growth type at the tillering stage by +-GA treatments was directly related to changes in plant type, judged by the number of grains per panicle at maturity
