Flower-bearing habits, pollen production, and pollen germination of Aesculus turbinata Blume

Aesculus turbinata Blume produces a panicle with male and hermaphrodite flowers. The male flowers are set on all lateral branches of the panicle, but the hermaphrodite flowers appear mainly on the lateral branches of the lower and middle parts of the panicle. the numbers of male and hermaphrodite flowers per panicle number 267 and 22 flowers on average, respectively. The number of male flowers per lateral branch are eight on average, whereas those of hermaphrodite flowers are two. The number of flowers per panicle and the sex ratio differ according to the individual tree and according to the parts of the crown. There is a tendency for the number of flowers to be greater and the ratio of hermaphrodite flowers to be more in the panicles of strong branches of the upper crown as compared with those of weak branches of the lower and inner crown. It was estimated that the number of pollen grains per panicle is 61,445,000 grains on average. The optimum conditions for artificial pollen germination are incubation in a medium of pH 7.9, 10% sucrose, and 1% agar at 20 degrees C for 2 h.
