Land privatization and consolidation in Latvia - Present situation and prospects

The role of land with its natural resources as the source of both material and mental values for the well-being of the population is explained. The structure of the land fund in Latvia is described. The percentage of agricultural land utilized by land owners and users in 1996 is presented is presented. The results of the questionnaire of the rural population in 347 rural districts show that only a third of the present peasants' farms can meet the requirements of a rational use of land. A successful agricultural production can be achieved by farmland consolidation
