The experiment was conducted to determine the immediate and cumulative effects of crop residues and cropping patterns on the yield of rice and upland crops and on soil properties. Cropping patterns used were rice-corn, rice-mungbean, rice-cowpea, rice-soybean/peanut, rice-corn + mungbean, rice-corn + cowpea and rice-corn + soybean. Residue incorporation did not significantly increase the yield of rice and legumes in the 1991 wet and dry season trials. Corn had higher yield when intercropped with legumes in both residue management. Incorporation of corn residues reduced the rice yield in 1992 WS. Land equivalent ratio of all cropping patterns in 1990 and 1991 trials were more than 1.0. In 1992, rice-corn + mungbean and rice-corn + peanut had less than 1.0 LER. Final soil analysis revealed higher organic matter, phosphorus and potassium
