Effects of different levels and storage of compost produced using compost fungus activator (Trichoderma harzianum) on the growth and yield of pechay (Brassica napus var. sinensis L.)

A study was conducted to assess the effect of the application of different levels and duration of storage of compost produced using compost fungus activator (Trichoderma harzianum) on growth, yield and economic return of pechay during two successive croppings. Results reveal that in the first cropping, plants treated with inorganic fertilizer were heavier and had greater marketable yield compared to those treated with different levels and duration of storage of compost although their plant height and number of leaves were comparable. Of the different levels of organic fertilizer applied, the highest yield obtained was at 60 tons/ha which was significantly higher than the control. The different duration of storage of compost showed no considerable effect on the parameters used. A reversal of the trend was observed during the second cropping when plants treated with inorganic fertilizer were shorter and had lower marketable yield. The yield and consequently the net returns of plants were proportional to the level of organic fertilizer applied. This indicates that organic fertilizer has longer residual effect than inorganic fertilizer. Application of compost also resulted to a decrease in bulk density of the soil and maintained as fairly high soil nutrient concentration even after the second cropping
